Find out everything you need to know about the Theory Test for trainee ADIs

The Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) Theory Test is made up of two parts; part one is a multiple choice test and the second part is a  hazard perception test. Both parts are taken on a computer at an approved testing centre.

The two parts must be passed at the same time before you are awarded a Theory Test pass certificate.

Part 2 – Hazard Perception

Once you have completed the first part of your Theory Test (the multiple choice questions) you will be required to complete, the Hazard Perception Test.

To begin, you will be shown a short video clip which shows how the Hazard Perception Test works.

You will then go through 14 video clips which feature everyday road scenes. In each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two, so it’s important to click each time you believe there is a hazard, not just once.

There is a window of opportunity where a hazard is present. If you click the mouse at the beginning of this window, i.e. when the hazard has first appeared, you will score the maximum amount of points. If you don’t click right away, you will score fewer points. If you are too late you will score zero. The maximum you can score on each hazard is five.

The pass mark for the hazard perception part of the theory test is 57 out of 75.

The following video explains how the UK’s Hazard Perception Test is marked, with explanations about the ‘marking window’ and how to watch the clips for hazards. The video clip also gives expert advice from an Advanced Police Driver and how to anticipate developing hazards.

At the end of the test

When you have finished the test you may leave the examination room. Once you have left the room, you can not re-enter. You will then be given your result letter by a member of the test centre staff.

The result letter tells you if you have passed or failed, and it gives you feedback on your test.

  1. I have just been for my adi theory test and I have failed on the hazard perception twice I am getting very frustrated because I did not get any 0 on the test or it did not show on the screen once but I only got 42 which I cannot believe.
