Your first steps to start learning to drive

Driving Test Success has been designed to make your learning to drive experience as easy and stress-free as possible. Over the last 14 years we have helped over 8 million people learn to drive, so you know you’re in safe hands.

You will find everything you need to know about learning to drive on our website along with all the help and advice you need to get you on the road to success. So here goes…

What is the minimum age for learning to drive?

You must be at least 17 years old to start learning to drive a car in Great Britain or Northern Ireland. However, if you receive Disability Living Allowance the minimum age for driving is 16.

First things first when learning to drive…

Before you can start learning to drive, sit the Theory Test or take your Practical Test, you must obtain a UK provisional licence. Visit our page on how to apply for your provisional licence for further details.

You must also ensure that the vehicle you are driving is roadworthy taxed and insured.

Learning to drive and The Highway Code

We strongly advise you to study the latest edition of The official Highway Code. This can be found in all our Theory Test productsDriving Test Success Online and we also have a dedicated Highway Code App for your mobile device. During your experience of learning to drive (as well as on your test), you will be assessed on your understanding of the Highway Code, so it’s essential that you have read and understand it.

Plus, many of the rules are legal requirements and if you disobey these rules you are committing a criminal offence.

Does your eyesight meet the minimum requirements when learning to drive?

You will also need to take an eyesight test before commencing your first driving lesson. You are required to be able to read an old-style vehicle number plate from 20.5 metres away in good daylight, or a new-style number plate from 20 metres away.

If you need glasses or contact lenses to do this, then you must wear them at all times when driving.
